Reunited with family but struggling to recover, woman resumes stay at SEAL ashram
In November 2018, a woman named Neha (name changed), a victim of domestic violence, found immediate safety and care at the SEAL Ashram in Panvel, a town near Mumbai. The SEAL Ashram, an NGO known as the Social and Evangelical Association for Love (SEAL), provided her with a sanctuary when she escaped from her marital home in Raigad district.
Upon her arrival at the ashram, Neha was in a critical condition, having been subjected to severe physical and emotional abuse by her husband and in-laws. Her father had withheld her educational certificates under pressure from her in-laws, further complicating her situation.
Initially, Neha sought police protection, but was advised to return to her in-laws. Feeling unsafe with both her in-laws and her own family in Satara city due to her in-laws' influence and financial power, she found solace at the SEAL Ashram.
The events involving Neha continued for several years after her initial arrival at the ashram. Pastor K. M. Philip, the founder and director of SEAL Ashram, took on the role of a foster father, providing her with protection and care.
Dr Abraham Mathai, chairman of Harmony Foundation, a Mumbai-based NGO, commented on Neha's case. He noted that it highlights the prioritization of societal norms over a child's safety and well-being. However, Dr Mathai also stated that the SEAL Ashram restored Neha's dignity and helped her lead a meaningful life.
The intervention of the SEAL Ashram not only provided Neha with immediate safety but also gave her a renewed sense of purpose and belonging. Despite facing challenges, Neha continues to live and work at the SEAL Ashram.
In 2024, Neha's brother took her to Pune, but she returned to the SEAL Ashram. Tragically, Neha's mother passed away due to distress over Neha's situation.
Dr Mathai, former vice chairman of Maharashtra State Minority Commission, also commented on Neha's case. He emphasized the importance of organisations like the SEAL Ashram in providing safety and support to victims of domestic violence.
Neha's story serves as a testament to the transformative power of organisations like the SEAL Ashram. Despite the hardships she faced, Neha found a place where she could rebuild her life and find a sense of purpose. Her story is a beacon of hope for other victims of domestic violence, demonstrating that there is a way out and a chance for a better life.
