SIBUR Presents a Novel Polypropylene Variant for Sanitary Uses

In a significant development for the hygiene and medical sectors, SIBUR, Russia's largest polymer producer, has unveiled a new grade of polypropylene (PP MG182 K). This innovative material is designed for use in the production of nonwoven fabrics, offering a more efficient and safer alternative to traditional solutions.

Over the past two decades, the use of polypropylene-based nonwovens (spunbond fabrics) in the hygiene and medical sectors has grown considerably. Recognising this trend, SIBUR has developed PP MG182 K as a raw material for producing nonwoven fabrics used in hygiene products, particularly in medical and hygiene sectors.

The new polypropylene grade effectively replaces traditional blends of several polymer grades and additives, providing the required softness for materials in direct contact with skin without relying on foreign softening additives that are no longer available in the Russian market.

Looking ahead, SIBUR aims to further improve PP MG182 K by eliminating phthalates—additives increasingly restricted worldwide—which will expand its applications and boost its export potential. This development suggests growing use in international markets for hygiene and medical nonwovens, complying with stricter regulatory standards and consumer preferences for safer, softer materials.

The development team at SIBUR is working tirelessly to further enhance the polypropylene copolymer, aiming to eliminate the use of phthalates, additives facing stricter regulation in several countries. This enhancement will broaden the scope of application of the copolymer grade as well as its export potential.

SIBUR expects to sell over 1,000 tonnes of the new polypropylene grade by the end of 2025. The new polypropylene grade was developed in collaboration with the R&D team from a leading Russian manufacturer of hygiene products, underscoring SIBUR's commitment to innovation and collaboration.

The new polypropylene grade has proven to be an effective alternative to traditional hygiene solutions that rely on blends of several polymer grades. This development is a testament to SIBUR's expertise in polymer production and its ability to meet the evolving needs of the hygiene and medical sectors.

This news marks an exciting step forward for SIBUR in the global hygiene and medical polymer materials market, positioning the company as a leader in providing safer, more efficient solutions for the production of nonwoven fabrics.

The new polypropylene grade, developed by SIBUR, is particularly useful in the production of nonwoven fabrics for hygiene products, contributing to the medical and health-and-wellness industry. With the aim of eliminating phthalates and meeting stricter regulations, this material could expand its applications in the global finance market through increased export potential.
