Singapore General Hospital Launches Regional Robotic Surgery Centre
Singapore General Hospital (SGH) has launched a Centre of Excellence for robotic-assisted surgery, marking a significant step in advancing surgical training and research in Southeast Asia. The Centre, a result of a two-year strategic collaboration with Johnson & Johnson MedTech, focuses on total knee replacement and is expected to serve as the primary training destination for surgeons across the region.
The Centre of Excellence, launched on 30 September 2025, was established following a Memorandum of Understanding signed by Professor Tan Mann Hong, Chairman of the Division of Musculoskeletal Sciences at SGH, and Guillermo Frydman, Area Managing Director of MedTech Southeast Asia, Johnson & Johnson MedTech. The collaboration encompasses three key areas: co-developing training curriculum, providing training facilities, and exploring ongoing research and innovation.
The Centre will serve as a hub for comprehensive training programmes and regional preceptorship sessions, aiming to enhance surgical skills and knowledge in robotic-assisted surgery. SGH performs over 2,500 total knee replacement procedures annually, with demand projected to grow significantly due to the ageing population in Singapore and the region. Recent research led by Associate Professor Lincoln Liow at SGH has shown promising results, with robotic-assisted surgery using Johnson & Johnson MedTech's VELYS leading to shorter surgical duration, improved early mobility, and shorter hospital stays compared to conventional surgery. At six months, patients who underwent robotic-assisted surgery showed improvements in quality-of-life measures for pain management.
The launch of the Centre of Excellence signifies Singapore's commitment to advancing surgical training and research in robotic-assisted surgery. With its focus on total knee replacement and comprehensive training programmes, the Centre is set to benefit surgeons and patients across Southeast Asia, improving surgical outcomes and quality of life.
