SPD female parliamentarians endorse advocacy of female violence in upper house legislature
In the heart of Oberhausen, Germany, the SPD Women's Association is making a powerful statement against domestic violence. On November 26, 2022, at 10:00 AM, members of the association will set up an information booth in Sterkrade-Mitte.
The booth is part of the annual actions against domestic violence, which aligns with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, observed every year on November 25. This day marks the start of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence campaign, a global movement that mobilizes over 2,000 organizations in 154 countries worldwide.
Ute Jordan-Ecker, the Chairwoman of the Oberhausen SPD Women's Association, stated that every violence victim is one too many. Every third woman in Germany experiences physical or sexualized violence from the age of 15, and in cases of rape, sexual harassment, and sexual assault in partnerships, the victims are 98.1% female.
The association continues the original action of 'TERRE DES FEMMES' with the slogan "Violence doesn't belong in the bag". This slogan is a poignant reminder that domestic violence is a pressing issue that affects many, yet remains hidden due to fear and shame.
International efforts to combat domestic violence against women include a range of global initiatives led by the United Nations (UN), the European Union (EU), and various regional and local organizations. A prominent global multi-year effort is the Spotlight Initiative, launched by the EU and UN to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls. This initiative aims to leave no one behind and aligns with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
In addition to these global initiatives, digital-era frameworks are also being developed to address online violence. The UN has declared 2025 as the Year to Combat Digital Violence Against Women, supporting innovative measures like Kenya's anonymous reporting app for online violence, France's digital harassment courts, and Germany's enhanced platform accountability rules to reduce gender-based online abuse.
The Oberhausen SPD Women's Association wants to empower victims of domestic violence to seek help. As part of their annual actions, they annually raise the "Free from Violence" flag at the SPD's business premises as a sign of solidarity. On November 26, 2022, they will distribute bags with informational materials to women under the motto "Violence doesn't belong in the bag".
The association's efforts are a testament to the global movement against domestic violence. They join organizations worldwide in raising awareness, strengthening local initiatives, connecting local and international advocacy efforts, sharing strategies, and pressuring governments to fulfill commitments to end violence against women.
The Oberhausen SPD Women's Association is joining the global movement against domestic violence by setting up an information booth, addressing health-and-wellness issues particularly women's health, on November 26, 2022. This action aligns with the annual actions against domestic violence and the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence campaign, which advocates for science and knowledge to combat such violence.
