Sudan Health Emergency: Cholera Epidemic Verified with 300 Reported Fatalities
In Sudan, the ongoing cholera outbreak has resulted in over 91,000 reported cases and more than 2,300 deaths since its start in August 2024. The latest data from mid-July 2025 shows a weekly increase of 1,307 new cases and 18 deaths across 12 states, with the highest number of cases reported in Tawila, North Darfur, and Qeissan, Blue Nile State [1].
The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Sudanese health ministry have emphasized that the humanitarian crisis in Sudan, including ongoing violence and displacement, has significantly contributed to the spread of disease epidemics. Cholera cases in Sudan are confirmed to be waterborne diarrhea [2].
To combat the disease, the Sudanese health ministry is attempting to supply chlorine and conduct sanitary measures. However, obstacles in the supply chain and implementation remain ongoing [3]. As of Friday, the WHO reported over 11,327 recorded cholera cases in Sudan [4].
In addition to the cholera outbreak, cases of conjunctivitis have risen to 2,689 in nine states, affecting displaced people in White Nile, Northern, and North Kordofan [5]. The floods and torrential rains in Sudan have affected more than 26,000 people, resulting in 38 deaths and 265 injuries [6].
The continuous violence in Sudan has severely disrupted healthcare services, potentially exposing many people to disease epidemics [7]. The obstacles faced in supplying chlorine and conducting sanitary measures are ongoing, making it challenging to control the spread of cholera and other diseases [8].
The Sudanese Ministry of Health has confirmed 300 new cholera-related deaths in the country [9]. Between January and June 2025, Sudan recorded over 32,000 cholera cases and 426 deaths, with a case fatality rate around 1.3%, predominantly in Khartoum, White Nile, and North Kordofan states [3]. UNICEF reports that since January 2025, more than 32,000 suspected cases and 742 deaths occurred, including many children under 5 years old, highlighting the severe impact on vulnerable populations amid ongoing conflict and humanitarian crises [2].
In summary, Sudan faces a severe and ongoing cholera outbreak, with rising cases of conjunctivitis and the ongoing humanitarian crisis exacerbating the situation. The challenges in supplying chlorine and conducting sanitary measures, combined with the disruptions to water, sanitation, and health services due to the ongoing violence, make it difficult to control the spread of these diseases [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9].

- The ongoing cholera outbreak in Sudan, marked by over 91,000 reported cases and more than 2,300 deaths since its start, is a significant news item and a major health concern that the World Health Organization (WHO) is closely monitoring.
- In an effort to improve health and wellness, the WHO is working alongside the Sudanese health ministry to combat the cholera outbreak by supplying chlorine and implementing sanitary measures to prevent further waterborne diarrhea cases, which have been confirmed to be the source of the cholera outbreak.
- With the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Sudan, entertainment, history, science, and discussions about medical-conditions such as cholera and other disease outbreaks, may take a backseat; however, understanding the history and causes of these outbreaks can aid in creating effective health-and-wellness initiatives for the affected populations in the future.
