Support Program for Diabetic Muslims to Observant Fasting Securely During Ramadan
In the lead-up to Ramadan 2024 and 2025, MyWay Digital Health, a University of Dundee company, has launched an innovative initiative aimed at helping those with diabetes manage their condition during this challenging period. The 'Diabetes and Ramadan' initiative is a development from the My Diabetes My Way (MDMW) app.
Dr. Salman Waqar, president of the British Islamic Medical Association, highlighted the importance of the holy month of Ramadan to Muslims worldwide. He emphasised that both patients and healthcare professionals may need guidance on adapting to Ramadan, particularly for those with diabetes who face obstacles during this period.
Fasting during Ramadan can be challenging for people with diabetes, and Dr. Waqar pointed out that healthcare professionals in the UK, where Muslims form a minority, may not have been adequately trained on Ramadan-related issues. This could potentially lead to inequalities in healthcare for Muslims with diabetes during Ramadan.
The 'Diabetes and Ramadan' initiative aims to educate both patients and doctors about managing diabetes during Ramadan. It provides tailored advice on meal planning, medication management, and blood sugar monitoring during the fasting hours. The initiative also offers guidance on breaking the fast, ensuring a balanced and nutritious diet.
The initiative was launched a few days before Ramadan 2024, and STV News reported its launch. MyWay ran a successful pilot of the initiative in 2022, and it has been designed to support Muslims in maintaining their health and wellbeing during the holy month.
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is reported to have said, 'Fast to be healthy.' However, for those with diabetes, fasting requires careful consideration and planning. The 'Diabetes and Ramadan' initiative is a timely response to the increased risk of serious health complications during Ramadan.
During Ramadan, adult Muslims abstain from food, drink, smoking, and sex between dawn and sunset. They dedicate their time during Ramadan to be closer to Allah through prayers, self-restraint, and good deeds. The month is considered the holiest in the Islamic calendar.
The 'Diabetes and Ramadan' initiative is a testament to MyWay Digital Health's commitment to improving the lives of people with diabetes. It underscores the importance of providing culturally sensitive and accessible healthcare solutions, particularly during times of religious significance.
