Sylvie Meis continues to grapple with her cancer daily
Slovakian presenter Sylvie Meis reflects on the profound effect her 2009 breast cancer diagnosis had on her life, saying it was the most challenging moment she has ever faced. In an interview with the podcast "May Way," Meis recalls discovering a lump in her breast on her 31st birthday and insisting on immediate surgery, despite her doctor's advice.
The procedure, followed by chemotherapy, led to hair loss and forced Meis to wear a wig when she returned to television just a few months later. During this time, her then-husband, footballer Rafael van der Vaart, offered emotional support. Yet, Meis admits that the illness played a role in their eventual divorce in 2013, as it encouraged her to assert independence within the relationship.
Today, Meis views her cancer as a transformative experience that made her the woman she is today. Reflecting on her 47th birthday earlier this year, she emphasized self-love as the most critical factor in her life. Regardless of life's challenges, Meis is resilient, stating that she stands behind herself "and that's what really matters."
In addition to her public career, Meis continues to advocate for breast cancer awareness. She shares posts with Pink Ribbon Deutschland and encourages ongoing conversations about the disease. Meis's journey serves as a reminder that although cancer remains a formidable adversary, it is possible to find strength and resilience in its aftermath.
