Taxi service providers may soon be compelled to offer booster seats for children in their vehicles, as proposed by the State Duma.
Taxi Regulations: Duma Deputies Propose Booster Seat Requirement for Child Passengers
In a recent development, State Duma deputy Tatiana Butskaya has disclosed plans for a bill that would mandate taxi drivers to carry booster seats in their vehicles for transporting children. The proposed regulation is designed to ensure safety for minors while traveling in taxis.
Speaking at a forum on taxi development in Yekaterinburg, Butskaya clarified that the bill would not mandate the use of child seats for all ages; instead, there would be age and height restrictions for children, who would require booster seats between the ages of 5-7 years old. Once a child outgrows the booster seat, they can move on to a standard seatbelt.
Butskaya also addressed the issue of non-frame car seats, stating that the Duma is facing challenges in regulating their sale. Despite these challenges, she noted that they are not compliant with traffic rules and cannot be used.
In a positive step towards child safety, some taxi aggregators have agreed to allow children to use their own child seats without incurring additional charges, a welcome change for parents who value the safety of their children. Currently, taxi rides with child seats or boosters can cost between an additional 200-300 rubles compared to rides in vehicles of equivalent comfort without children.
While Russia's taxi regulations vary, with official taxis being subject to a regulatory regime and private "gypsy-cabs" potentially operating without the same level of oversight, this proposed regulation focuses on enhancing child safety in licensed taxis. Parents planning to travel with children in taxis are advised to check local regulations or consult with their taxi service provider for any specific requirements regarding child safety seats.
