Thanks to an intense data collection process, the number of known mushroom species blooming across Lower Saxony and Bremen has skyrocketed from 3,000 in 1998 to a whopping 6,000, as per a fresh survey by experts. This jaw-dropping increase in fungal diversity has been documented in a new reference list published by the NLWKN (Lower Saxony State Agency for Water Management, Coastal Protection, and Nature Conservation).

Rahel Faber from the NLWKN's statewide species protection division highlights the importance of this updated list for updating the Red List, a vital directory of endangered, or extinct, species. According to Faber, "Understanding which mushroom species inhabit our region is crucial for assessing their endangerment. This knowledge empowers us to update the Red List."

The Fungal Consideration

This data has been sourced from mycological working groups and hundreds of mushroom enthusiasts in both states, aiming to include nearly every recorded mushroom species. The team states the growth in data has stemmed from increased and more focused mapping efforts, better literature availability, and novel scientific discoveries and methodologies for identifying species.

According to Axel Schilling, Lower Saxony coordinator of the German Society for Mycology (DGfM) and the leading editor of the reference list, accurately identifying mushrooms can often be a complex venture. "Their fruiting bodies are weather-prone and short-lived, sometimes appearing intermittently, often missed in the process." This calls for continuous attention and rigorous research.

This increase in known species mostly stems from enhanced survey efforts, improved identification techniques, and greater participation by dedicated amateurs and professionals.
