**Tower Health Announces Layoffs and Streamlines Operations**
Tower Health, a four-hospital health system in Pennsylvania, has announced layoffs and eliminated positions, affecting approximately 50 positions, which is less than 0.5% of the entire workforce. The staff reductions are primarily targeted at management-level roles and other employees, as the health system aims to streamline its organizational structures to enhance operations.
The layoffs come as Tower Health's financial position has strengthened after several years of significant losses. The health system reported an operating profit of $4.2 million over the first nine months of fiscal year 2025, a marked improvement from the previous year's operating loss of $27.4 million during the same period. Despite this progress, Tower Health still faces financial challenges, including substantial losses in some of its hospitals.
The layoffs coincide with ongoing labor tensions at Pottstown Hospital, where unionized nurses have been working without a contract since November. Pottstown Nurses United, representing about 300 health care workers, is asking for improved policies to enforce safe staffing levels, higher wages, and more staff at the hospital.
Tower Health's officials have expressed understanding for the impact of these changes and do not take them lightly. They stated that the changes are designed to build a more resilient organization well-positioned for the future. The affected employees will receive job placement assistance and transitioning benefits from Tower Health.
The staff reductions will be implemented across Tower Health's locations, including Phoenixville, Pottstown, Reading hospitals, outpatient oncology care, behavioral health, imaging, home health, and urgent care offices. It is important to note that St. Christopher's hospital is not included in the Tower Health layoffs.
An informational picket is planned outside Pottstown Hospital by the union on Wednesday. Contract negotiations between Tower Health and unionized nurses at Pottstown Hospital are ongoing.
Despite the layoffs, Tower Health's leaders are committed to maintaining the quality of care delivered by the health system. They emphasized that the layoffs are not expected to impact the quality of care.
