Tragic Demise: 36-Year-Old Bodybuilding Champion Discovered in Hotel Pool During Family Vacation; Police Initiate Investigation
Party-loving fitness queen Luz María Barrera Agatón met her untimely end in the shimmering waters of a tropical pool during a family vacay, sparking a probe by Mexican authorities.
Her stunning corpse was discovered lifelessly floating in the pool at the luxurious Coco Resort & Villas Hotel in Motul, west of Cancun, Mexico, early Sunday morning.
Though no foul play has been officially confirmed, police are investigating the circumstances surrounding her demise.
The legendary fitness influencer was enjoying a chat with her loved ones hubside the pool around midnight before retiring for the night. Alone time ensued, and when morning broke, Luz was found face-down in the water.
Emergency services swarming to the scene were unable to revive the beauty babe, who had been crowned Fitness Champion at the 2017 Mister Mexico bodybuilding contest and the queen of the Motul Carnival in 2024.
Reports state that Luz had received threatening banners at her gym in Merida mere weeks prior to her death – banners that she hid from investigators by removing and trashing them herself.
Adding intrigue to the tragic tale, Luz had previously encountered threats in 2017 and had another distressing incident at her gym in 2023 when a young man met his maker after a barbell fell on him due to the carelessness of a trainer.
Police are presently teasing out whether these incidents are connected to Luz's untimely demise, but at present, the inquiry remains open, with all investigative avenues being pursued.
The president of the Yucatecan Association of Bodybuilding and Fitness (AFFEY), Evangelina Cimé Mézquita, took to Facebook to mourn the loss of the respected athlete and style icon, expressing her disbelief and condolences to the grieving family.
