Trump Administration Revokes Humanitarian Permit for Critically Ill Mexican Girl, According to Attorney

LOS ANGELES, California - The Trump administration has revoked a temporary humanitarian permit for a critically ill Mexican child receiving life-saving medical treatment at a California hospital, the child's lawyers revealed on Wednesday.

Gina Amato, the child's attorney, stated that the mother received notifications in April and May informing her that the U.S. government was taking away the temporary humanitarian permission granted to the family in 2023 when they brought their sick daughter to the U.S.-Mexico border. She was informed that the family may be subject to possible deportation.

The four-year-old girl has since been discharged from the hospital due to a treatment that provides intravenous nutrition via a backpack. Her lawyers stated that she lacks the strength to survive without this treatment as she suffers from short bowel syndrome, which inhibits her from ingesting and processing nutrients on her own, and the treatment is unavailable in Mexico.

"Doctors have explicitly stated that she will die within days without this medical attention," Amato said during a press conference in Los Angeles. "Deporting this family under these conditions is not only illegal but also constitutes a moral failure that violates basic principles of humanity and decency."

The lawyers declined to reveal the child's real name to protect her privacy.

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services did not offer comments at this time.

A high-ranking Homeland Security official, via an email from a press inquiry address, stated that there is no active deportation process for the family, and a recent more recent request for temporary humanitarian permission presented two weeks ago is still being considered.

The Trump administration has been pressing to dismantle policies from the Biden administration that enabled certain individuals to legally reside in the U.S., typically for two years.

The temporary humanitarian permit, which does not aim at granting U.S. citizenship to migrants, was widely used during the Biden administration to ease pressure on the border with Mexico. Previously, it was granted on a case-by-case basis to address individual emergencies and also to address humanitarian crises worldwide including Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos in the late 1970s.

The child's mother, Deysi Vargas, told reporters that her daughter was mostly confined to a hospital due to her health issues. Once they reached the border, U.S. officials took the small girl to a hospital in San Diego, and she remained there until she was well enough to join a program through the Children's Hospital in Los Angeles, which allows her to receive treatment at home in Bakersfield, California.

"Now she enjoys going to the park and the supermarket, and most importantly, living outside of a hospital," Vargas said.

Her daughter was sitting nearby, smiling and playing with stickers, while carrying the black backpack that helps keep her alive.

The Children's Hospital of Los Angeles declined to comment for this story.

The lawyers stated that they have written to federal government officials, asking them if they made an error, and have submitted a new request for temporary humanitarian permission for the family.

Amato, who is director of the Immigrants' Rights Project at Public Counsel - a non-profit law firm, stated that they have not received a response and the notice indicates that the family could be deported. She also mentioned that she has contacted elected officials for help.
