Trump's Executive Order Boosts AI Fight Against Childhood Cancer
President Trump has taken significant steps to combat childhood cancer. In his first term, he established the Childhood Cancer Data Initiative (CCDI) to collect, generate, and analyze data related to the disease. Recently, he signed an Executive Order to harness artificial intelligence (AI) for advancing pediatric cancer research and treatment, allocating $50 million in new funding.
The Order aims to use AI to improve diagnosis, accelerate clinical trials, and enhance prevention efforts. It directs increased investment from existing Federal funds for the CCDI and encourages private sector engagement. AI has the potential to transform pediatric cancer care and research by building on CCDI's data infrastructure and making discoveries with appropriate privacy protections.
President Trump believes prioritizing investment in AI-enabled science and creating high-quality AI-ready scientific datasets is crucial. In July 2021, he released America's AI Action Plan, echoing these sentiments. The Order instructs the MAHA Commission to work with other officials to develop AI uses for improved diagnoses, treatments, cures, and prevention strategies for pediatric cancer. The Secretary of Health and Human Services will integrate AI into current work on interoperability to provide data for research and clinical trial design.
Pediatric cancer remains the leading cause of disease-related death for children in the United States, with an increasing incidence since 1975. President Trump's initiatives, including the CCDI and the recent Executive Order, demonstrate a commitment to using AI and data-driven approaches to tackle this pressing issue and improve outcomes for children with cancer.
