Turkey continues support for Gaza as the situation of Palestinians worsens
In the Palestinian enclave of Gaza, the humanitarian situation has reached critical levels, with over 60,000 Palestinians killed and more than 139,000 injured since October 2023[1][2][5]. The ongoing conflict and 18-year blockade imposed by Israel have resulted in widespread famine and starvation, with about one in three people going without food for days[1][3][4].
The blockade, combined with airstrikes and ground fighting, has led to massive displacement and the near-collapse of the health system. Malnutrition cases, especially among children under five, are overwhelming hospitals[1][3]. The United Nations (UN) and humanitarian groups have urgently called for ceasefires and lifting restrictions to mitigate the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in Gaza[1][2][3].
Turkey, along with other international organizations like the UN, World Food Programme (WFP), the International Rescue Committee (IRC), and World Health Organization (WHO), is involved in providing humanitarian aid. The WFP is distributing food to about 1.3 million people, but access and supply remain unstable due to the blockade and ongoing hostilities[4].
To address the dire situation, Turkey has sent 14 planes and 16 vessels loaded with aid to Gaza, delivering over 101,000 tons of humanitarian aid since October 2023[6]. This aid includes more than 25,000 tons of food aid, 3,171 tons of drinking water, and 25,180 tents. Additionally, Turkey has provided housing for 1,834 people from 613 families in various provinces[3].
Within the scope of medical aid, eight field hospitals, 53 ambulances, and 247.5 tons of medical supplies were sent to Gaza. Furthermore, Turkey has hosted 430 patients evacuated from Gaza due to heavily damaged health care facilities[3].
To improve hygiene conditions, 281,238 hygiene kits and 550 tons of hygiene materials were distributed[7]. Aid supplies also included one forklift and 1,451 generators for energy needs, 250 tons of fuel as fuel support, procured locally, and $3 million in financial support for the sea logistics of 30,000 tons of flour, delivered in cooperation with the AFAD and UNRWA[6].
Activists have shared videos on social media showing the extreme frailty of victims like 16-month-old Mohammed Zakaria Asfour, who lost his life at the Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis due to starvation-related complications[8]. The death toll from starvation and malnutrition has risen to 197, including 96 children, with four more deaths reported over the past day[9].
The Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) leads the humanitarian efforts for Gaza, working in cooperation with UNRWA[6]. The situation in Gaza is dire, and the need for unobstructed humanitarian access, protective measures for civilians, and sustained delivery of food, medical supplies, and clean water is urgent[2][3].
