Turkish Red Crescent Saves Pregnant Woman With Rare 'Golden Blood' Transfusion

The Turkish Red Crescent has successfully arranged a life-saving transfusion of Rh null blood, often referred to as 'golden blood', for a pregnant woman in need. The rare blood type, found in just one in 6 million people, was transported from Spain to Gaziantep to save 30-year-old mother Naide Soylu during her seventh month of pregnancy.

Naide Soylu, suffering from thalassemia, required a blood transfusion. However, standard donations, including those from her family, were incompatible with her rare Rh null blood type. The Turkish Red Crescent coordinated the transportation of three units of Rh null blood from Spain, with two frozen units and one fresh unit from a volunteer donor. The blood was transported under strict cold-chain conditions, with only 72 hours of usability once thawed.

Soylu expressed her relief and gratitude, stating, 'I was scared I might not get to hold my baby. When the blood arrived from Spain, I felt hope again. I realized how precious each drop of blood is.'

The successful blood transfusion enabled Naide Soylu to safely deliver her baby. The Turkish Red Crescent's efforts highlight the importance of rare blood type donations and the global network of support for those in critical need.
