The town of Saint-Quentin in Aisne, France, is currently grappling with a severe E. coli outbreak. As of late June 2025, health authorities have confirmed 29 cases of the bacterial infection, with seven victims still hospitalized and the sad loss of a 12-year-old girl.

The outbreak, which began in mid-June, has primarily affected children. Initially, 19 children were reported with symptoms, but the number has since risen. The infection is linked to the consumption of meat from one of the five butcheries that have been temporarily closed for investigation.

French health authorities have identified Escherichia coli (E. coli) as the causative bacterium. In response, authorities have launched a joint health and judicial inquiry to determine liability and the exact causes of the contamination. Health officials are also conducting further tests on meat samples from the implicated butcheries to verify the contamination and prevent further spread.

The prefecture announced the link between the food poisoning cases and the butcheries on Wednesday. The food poisoning incidents are linked to several suspected butcheries in Saint-Quentin and surrounding areas. The investigation now includes offenses of involuntary homicide, bodily harm, endangerment, and aggravated deception endangering human health.

Since the alert began, there have been 32 recorded cases of food poisoning linked to the consumption of meat. It's important to note that new cases may occur even after the closure of the butcheries, as symptoms can appear several days after consumption.

Contamination between people is also possible, which underscores the importance of strict hygiene measures. For instance, two children from the same family have been infected by the E. coli bacteria in Aisne.
