Union Health Ministry Probes Cough Syrup Deaths in MP, Issues Advisory

The Union Health Ministry has launched an investigation into the deaths and kidney injuries in Madhya Pradesh linked to the cough syrup Coldrif. Samples have been collected in coordination with state authorities.

The ministry is probing the incident after at least nine children lost their lives in Madhya Pradesh, as reported by Dr Pawan Nandurkar. The cough syrup in question, Coldrif, does not contain Propylene Glycol, a potential contaminant. Instead, it is a dextromethorphan-based formulation not recommended for paediatric use.

An advisory has been issued to all states, urging them to ensure the rational use of cough syrups among children. The ministry is also investigating similar reports from Rajasthan. The company manufacturing the cough syrup under investigation has not been identified yet.

The Union Health Ministry's probe into the cough syrup-related deaths and injuries continues. The ministry has collected samples and issued an advisory on the use of cough syrups among children. Further details on the manufacturer and the cause of contamination are awaited.
