University Hospital Freiburg Introduces Lung Cancer Early Detection Program

The University Hospital Freiburg has taken a significant step forward in cancer screening with the introduction of a lung cancer early detection program for heavy smokers. This program, a milestone in medical care, combines the most modern diagnostic methods with medical expertise and close interdisciplinary cooperation.

The lung cancer center at the University Hospital Freiburg offers a CT scan for the screening, a non-invasive method that can detect early changes in the lungs, even before symptoms appear. The program is designed for individuals aged between 50 and 75 who are currently smoking or have quit within the last ten years. They must have at least 25 years of smoking experience and 15 "pack-years" to be eligible.

State President Carsten Gabbert expressed his pleasure at the institution's ability to support the program with a swift and efficient approval process. He highlighted that the program is a contribution to improving medical care in Germany and complements the nationwide efforts to implement the National Cancer Plan.

The program's start marks the University Hospital Freiburg taking a pioneering role in Baden-Württemberg. Before admission to the program, an informative doctor's conversation takes place to discuss benefits, risks, such as radiation exposure and possible false-positive findings. The screening is painless, takes only a few minutes, and does not require a contrast agent.

Patients are closely accompanied from appointment scheduling to result discussion. They are also informed about the chances of quitting smoking and supported if necessary. The program offers the opportunity to discover lung cancer in an early, potentially curable stage.

Screening recommendations are taken up by patients diagnosed with cirrhosis, especially to detect complications early, such as screening for gastroesophageal varices via endoscopy in all patients at diagnosis, based on clinical criteria like the Baveno criteria. This approach is also aimed at early detection and effective management of diseases.

The approval of the program was made possible through close and good cooperation with the government presidency of Freiburg. The use of low-dose technology and the most modern CT scanners makes the examination particularly gentle. Referral for the lung cancer screening can be made by certified specialists in general medicine, occupational medicine, and internal medicine.

Experts from various fields, including pulmonology, thoracic surgery, radiation therapy, oncology, radiology, nuclear medicine, pathology, and others, exchange information on the best further course of action. This interdisciplinary approach ensures comprehensive and effective care for patients.

The last CT thorax examination must be more than 12 months ago, and there must be no known lung cancer or serious pre-existing condition that excludes participation. The lung cancer early detection program at the University Hospital Freiburg is a significant milestone in cancer screening and a testament to the institution's commitment to improving medical care.
