Speaking Out on Global Health Equity: Taiwan's Minister on the WHA Snafu

Chiu stated yesterday that Taiwan possesses top-tier medical services and has extended help to numerous nations. Emphasizing the importance of universal health accessibility, he reiterated that this vital aspect shouldn't be influenced by politics.

Chiu's comments followed China's Taiwan Affairs Office claiming the Democratic Progressive Party's unwillingness to accept the "1992 consensus" eliminated the political basis for Taiwan's participation in the WHA.

By subtly opposing China's stance, Chiu reaffirmed Taiwan's dedication to global health cooperation.

When asked about potential interactions with Taiwanese residing abroad during events outside the WHA venue, Chiu acknowledged the difficulties in distinguishing "inside" and "outside." He emphasized the significance of exhibiting Taiwan's exceptional healthcare abilities and compassion wherever possible.

Since the WHA labeling Taiwan as "Chinese Taipei" for observer status was terminated in 2017, Taiwan has been sidelined from participating in WHA events due to political pressure from China.

The "1992 consensus" represents an understanding between the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) and the Chinese Communist Party, agreeing to acknowledge a single China, with each side interpretating "China" differently.

Though limited in international participation, Taiwan continues to advocate for global health equity and contributes to healthcare endeavors through annual WHA delegations, promotional campaigns, international cooperation, and diplomatic support. Taiwan's efforts underscore its readiness to collaborate globally, even in the face of political adversity.
