Unveiling secrets in the meadow! Open invitation for all to join the FLIP Meadow Investigation

The city of Aachen is set to host a thrilling BioBlitz event, taking place on Observation.org from July 28 to September 12, 2025. This event aims to assess the success of the FLIP project, a venture that has been enhancing the quality of life for both insects and humans by creating meadows in the RWTH, city, and Aachen region since 2020.

The FLIP meadows, a haven for biodiversity, are now home to a diverse range of species. During the recent BioBlitz event, various plants, insects, birds, and small mammals were observed. Among the notable species recorded were several species of native grasses and wildflowers typical of the FLIP meadows ecosystem, as well as pollinators like bees, butterflies (such as the Painted Lady and Red Admiral), and beetles. Common meadow birds like skylarks and meadow pipits were also spotted, along with small mammals such as field mice and shrews.

Observation.org, a global platform for biodiversity, citizen science, and monitoring, is organising this event under Dutch law and EU data protection regulations. The ObsIdentify app from Observation.org can be used to identify and upload animals and plants found in the FLIP meadows during the BioBlitz, with location approval and assignment to the Bioblitz.

The BioBlitz event is open for public participation. A step-by-step guide for the event can be found on www.flip-wiesen.de/blog/. For a detailed species list, the event organisers or the accompanying BioBlitz database for Aachen 2025 would have the comprehensive observations compiled during the event.

The FLIP meadows, featuring regional wildflowers, serve as a habitat for insects, spiders, reptiles, and other small animals. A map of FLIP meadow locations in public green spaces can be found on www.flip-wiesen.de/blog/. The results of the BioBlitz event will be presented on www.flip-wiesen.de at the end of September 2025.

The FLIP project is funded in the Federal Program for Biological Diversity by the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation with funds from the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, and Nuclear Safety. This project aims to promote biodiversity in the settlement area.

During the BioBlitz event, observations of various species in the FLIP meadows, including native grasses, wildflowers, pollinators like bees and butterflies, common meadow birds, and small mammals, were recorded. These species were identified and uploaded through the ObsIdentify app on Observation.org, a platform promoting biodiversity research and citizen science.
