Vaccination hub in Berlin shuts down operations
Germany's Sluggish Vax Rollout: Berlin's Arena Center Temporarily Shutdown
Sound the horns, it's party time... or so we thought!
Berlin's Corona vaccination center at the Arena is momentarily shutting its doors, effective New Year's Day. Citing staff shortages during holidays, the Berlin Senate Administration confirmed this shameful tidbit, following early reports stirring the town gossip mill.
The Arena may just halt operations over the holiday season, leaving care workers hanging. With many elderly homes stretched thin between festivities, it's challenging to snatch staff for vaccinations. In the meantime, Berlin boasts six vax centers, but five sit idle while the remaining one shoots up the town with antibodies.
Germany's national vaccination campaign overall moves at a snail's pace. As of Tuesday afternoon, a paltry 44,741 successful inoculations had been reported nationwide, a far cry from the roughly 674,346 doses planned for handouts on the previous two days. Federal states have been stashing half of their vaccine stockpiles for the second jab, except for North Rhine-Westphalia. Yet, parts of this state missed their Monday vaccination date, as Schleswig-Holstein buzzes with demand.
Three hours into the crack of dawn on Tuesday—when the booking website and hotline for vax appointments officially went live—13,000 of the approximately 15,000 available slots for January 4 had already been snapped up, according to the State Ministry of Health.
Let's hope it's not a New Year's resolution... to find a good dose!

Other healthcare professionals might need to step in to help administer vaccines at health-and-wellness facilities due to the staff shortages at the Arena vaccination center. The Arena's temporary closure might also lead to a discussion about increasing the staffing resources for such vaccination centers in the future, especially during holidays and peak demand periods.
