In the upcoming BBC series, "Parenthood," Elisabeth Oakham, a producer and director with a passion for environmental storytelling, delves into the challenges faced by animal parents around the world. This time, she focuses on the hatchlings of the giant Amazon River turtle in Guapore, south Brazil.
The scene is a spectacle of nature, as the hatchlings emerge from their eggs when the rain softens the sand above them. However, climate change poses a significant threat to their survival. The mothers of the hatchlings take a huge gamble on the weather when they decide to lay their almost 100 eggs at 1m (3.2ft) below the surface, two to three months ahead of the rainy season. This allows enough time for the sand above the eggs to harden into a protective crust.
However, recent climate changes have disrupted this process. Too little or too much rain can be detrimental to the hatchlings' survival. Disastrous floods caused by early rains have drowned the majority of the year's hatchlings in two of the last five years. If they haven't done so before the floods come, they drown.
The filmmakers were able to capture the hatchlings underground due to recent research on turtle communication. The scene features the hatchlings' squeaking, believed by scientists to be a sign of them agreeing to emerge at the same time. Interestingly, this is the only turtle species known to display post-hatch parental care, with the mothers likely calling out to guide them to the water.
Climate change impacts the life cycles and survival of these turtles primarily by intensifying droughts, increasing temperatures, and causing habitat degradation. Droughts reduce river and floodplain water levels critical for turtle habitat and nesting sites, while rising temperatures can affect sex determination in hatchlings, potentially skewing population dynamics. Additionally, climate-driven deforestation and fires further degrade their habitats and increase mortality risks.
While poaching, dams, and pollution remain known direct threats to the Arrau turtle populations, the indirect impacts of climate change through habitat alteration and hydrological cycle disruption represent critical emerging challenges for their survival and reproductive cycles.
Despite these challenges, the largest gathering of freshwater turtles on the planet occurs when the mothers of the hatchlings leave the river for the sand. The hatchlings must absorb part of their yolk sac, which takes about three days after breaking through the shell, before they can escape the sand and make their way to the water.
The rains came early during the filming of this scene, but the turtles managed to make it out in time, making for a heartwarming and educational addition to the "Parenthood" series.
