How much does dying set one back? - What's the financial burden associated with death?

After a loved one passes away, the remaining family members are tasked with more than just emotional healing. Organizing a funeral service adds a significant burden to their plate, involving everything from hiring a funeral director to planning a suitable memorial service. While the grief is the primary focus, some funeral directors may take advantage of the situation by charging exorbitant prices. Alexander Helbach, spokesperson for Aeternitas, a consumer initiative for funeral culture, says, "It's not the norm, but unfortunately, it happens sometimes."

To help alleviate this issue, being aware of the costs involved can prevent unexpected financial hardships during this difficult time.

The Funeral Director: The Heftiest Expense

"Funeral director fees are usually the most significant cost factor," Helbach explains. These fees cover a multitude of services, including:

  1. Retrieving the deceased
  2. Preserving the body with refrigeration
  3. Preparing the body for burial or cremation
  4. Transportation to the crematorium or funeral hall
  5. Conducting the burial ceremony
  6. Providing condolence cards, an obituary, floral arrangements, or other related services
  7. Managing paperwork such as deregistering the deceased with authorities and insurance companies, as well as organizing death certificates.

Despite these many services, it's important to note that funeral directors also mark up the price of coffins and urns. If you choose to purchase these items independently, most providers may not be willing to accept this arrangement. Helbach estimates that a moderate four-digit sum for funeral director fees is reasonable, but the total cost can skyrocket depending on your preferences. To avoid surprise expenses, it's recommended to obtain a written cost estimate beforehand, allowing you to select only the necessary services and find ways to save.

Cemetery Fees: Paying Upfront for the Grave Site

In addition to funeral director fees, cemetery fees make up the second major expense. These cover the burial costs and the usage fee for the grave plot, which must be paid in full in advance. The amount varies depending on the location and type of grave plot. Generally, anonymous burials cost less than €1,000, while family graves can cost several thousand euros. You can use the cemetery fee database provided by Aeternitas to find out the expected costs in your city.

Be Wary of One-Size-Fits-All Deals

Online, you'll often find all-inclusive offers, but Helbach refers to them as "discount undertakers." These packages typically cost around €1,000, with the deceased being collected and anonymously buried. The catch? Make sure you're clear on the details about where the deceased will be buried, as some lower-cost providers may opt for burial abroad or in mass graves.

Save Money Through Timing and Advance Planning

To avoid night or holiday surcharges, give funeral directors at least 24 hours to prepare, and ensure that you have enough time to compare prices among different providers before making a decision.

Advance planning by discussing and documenting your end-of-life wishes with your family can significantly reduce the stress and conflict for your loved ones during their time of grief. By providing financial support for your chosen arrangements, you can also help ease the financial burden on them when the time comes.

If There's No Money, Who Pays?

Heirs are legally obligated to cover funeral costs (Section 1968), and if no relatives exist, the local authority will manage the burial. If the available funds are inadequate, heirs can apply for a so-called social funeral via the responsible social welfare office. In such cases, the state covers the costs for a simple, local burial.

Keep in mind that only direct relatives (such as spouses, children, or fixed partners) can claim funds for a social funeral. Friends are not eligible for reimbursement.

When navigating the complex world of funeral costs, awareness and preparation are key. Make sure to ask questions, compare prices, and plan ahead to ensure that your loved one receives a fitting farewell, while minimizing financial strain on your family.
