Wiesbaden to Introduce Orange Seating Arrangements in the Near Future
In the heart of Wiesbaden, a vibrant display of orange benches is taking shape. Since November 2024, 24 of these benches have been ordered, each one symbolising opposition against violence against women and girls.
The city of Wiesbaden, under the patronage of Mayor Christiane Hinninger (Greens), has taken a significant step in the fight against this societal issue. The installation of all promised benches is expected to be completed by Tuesday, November 25, coinciding with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
The orange benches in Wiesbaden serve not just as a symbol but also as a practical means of providing immediate assistance to affected women. Each bench will have plaques with emergency numbers and support points.
The Zonta Club Wiesbaden, an organisation dedicated to women's empowerment and gender equality, is delighted with the city's commitment to this cause. Barbel Riemann, the coordinator of the initiative at the Zonta Club Wiesbaden, highlighted the importance of the action, stating that each orange bench is a public declaration of action against violence against women.
The initiative, part of the international campaign "Zonta says NO - Orange the World", has garnered support from numerous local councils, institutions, clubs, and companies. The final installation of the benches will take place at the municipal cinema Caligari in Wiesbaden, where the last event will officially hand over the remaining benches.
Pastor Ursula Kuhn, during a service, described the bench as a "sermon in wood and color" that calls on people to look and not to remain silent. Hinninger emphasised that violence against women is a societal task, and the city of Wiesbaden is taking responsibility by protecting those affected, strengthening prevention, and bringing awareness to the public.
The latest orange bench was inaugurated at the Lutherkirche, sponsored by the Protestant Women of the Lutherkirche. The action against violence against women in Wiesbaden will conclude with a joint event at the municipal cinema Caligari, marking the completion of the installation of the orange benches on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
