Wildlife Group Condemns St. Hubertus Mass in Lucerne
The Wildlife Conservation Association has condemned a planned St. Hubertus Mass in Lucerne, scheduled for September 13 at the Franciscan Church. The event, featuring Gudrun Dötsch and the 'Auerhahn Luzern' natural horn players, has been criticized for glorifying hunting and contradicting Christian values.
The mass, honouring Saint Hubertus, a former hunter who later opposed hunting, has been deemed incompatible with Christian ethics by the Wildlife Conservation Association. Theologian Julia Bielecki has also expressed concern, stating that blessing hunters for killing defenceless animals sends the wrong message. The Veterinary Association for Animal Welfare and scientific studies agree that hunting is not an effective way to regulate wild animal populations.
The association has appealed to church representatives to distance themselves from such events in the future. PETA and similar organizations have generally criticized hunting-related events due to ethical concerns. Up to two-thirds of hunted animals may suffer for days before dying, and the Fifth Commandment, 'Thou shalt not kill,' is contradicted by every hunt involving killing.
The St. Hubertus Mass in Lucerne has sparked controversy due to its association with hunting. Critics argue that it contradicts Christian values and causes unnecessary suffering to animals. The Wildlife Conservation Association has urged church representatives to reconsider their involvement in such events.
