A tragic incident occurred on July 24, 2025, when a worker died at a worksite in Kansas City, Kansas. The incident took place around 11:45 p.m. on Thursday, and the exact location was near S. 16th Street and Metropolitan Avenue, south of the Kansas River.

According to the Kansas City, Kan. Police Department, the trench where the worker was found had collapsed. The trench is estimated to be up to 25 feet deep at its deepest point and approximately 16 to 18 feet wide. The trench is located in uneven terrain, making the incident even more dangerous.

First responders were called to the scene after workers noticed that their co-worker had been missing for some time. Upon arrival, they found that the excavator operated by the worker was not moving, raising concerns about the worker's whereabouts.

The Kansas City, Kan. Police Department and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are investigating the incident. The police department has also used specialized heavy rescue teams to search the area. Public works and emergency management employees have also been involved in the task.

However, there is no confirmed information that a trench box, a protective structure used in excavations, was used during the worksite. KCK Fire believes that the trench may not have been equipped with a trench box. The absence of a trench box is being investigated as a possible cause of the trench collapse.

The identity of the worker's employer remains unknown at this time. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and further information will be released as it becomes available. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased worker during this difficult time.
