The "Speedweek" or Blitzermarathon, a week-long intensive speed enforcement campaign in Germany, is underway. This initiative, focused on speeding drivers, is a collaborative effort among several German federal states, including Baden-Württemberg, Brandenburg, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saxony-Anhalt, and Schleswig-Holstein. However, not all states participate every year.

The goal of Speedweek is to protect lives on the roads through speed monitoring. During this period, the police intensify their monitoring of speeding, with a focus on accident-prone sections of roads and areas with a high risk of danger. The campaign targets all roads but concentrates on high-risk areas known for speeding violations.

This action week, coordinated across Europe, runs until the 10th of August. The European Roads Policing Network supports the Roadpol speed control week, and other European countries participate in this initiative as well.

The impact of Speedweek is measured in terms of increased compliance with speed limits during and after the campaign, and a reduction in speeding-related accidents. Research and police reports indicate that such campaigns have a positive effect by not only catching offenders but also deterring speeding behavior more broadly, contributing to improved traffic safety overall.

In Baden-Württemberg, driving too fast has been the number one cause of fatal traffic accidents for years. The state, like others, does not always provide advance information about the locations of the speed controls during the Speedweek. However, the intensified speed controls are an effective means of combating speeding and sensitizing all road users to the issue of traffic safety.

According to Saxony-Anhalt's Minister of the Interior, Tamara Zieschang, intensified speed controls are a powerful tool in the fight against speeding. She believes that such campaigns play a crucial role in promoting traffic safety awareness and fostering a culture of responsible driving.

While the extent of participation varies among the federal states, the common goal remains the same - to draw attention to the persistent issue and dangers of speeding and to work towards a safer road environment for everyone.

  • In the mission to promote health-and-wellness by ensuring safer road conditions, Saxony-Anhalt's Minister of the Interior, Tamara Zieschang, believes that intensified speed controls, like those during the Speedweek, are a powerful science-backed tool in the fight against speeding.
  • To underline the importance of traffic safety, the European Roads Policing Network supports the Roadpol speed control week, which not only focuses on speeding violations but also promotes the broader use of transport that conforms to speed limits, contributing to a healthier and safer society.
