Workout Regime for Scribes and Literary Buffs
Embrace the dynamic life of a scribe, not just a desk-bound drone! Writing might seem like a stationary pursuit, but it offers ample opportunities for physical activity. While you're churning out blog posts, articles, or research papers, remember that healthy habits can boost your focus and productivity. Although sitting for extended hours can pose risks to your health, it's not difficult to integrate exercise into your writing routine.
In my previous piece, I delved into nutritious eating options for writers. In this installment, let's focus on fostering an "active" writer identity. Research suggests that spending more than 4 hours a day seated is detrimental to one's health, potentially shortening our lifespan. While the repercussions of inactivity, ranging from weight gain to heart complications, are well documented, let's discuss the perks of staying active as a writer.
Physical activity not only promotes overall health but also oxygenates the brain and improves focus, consequently enhancing the quality and speed of your writing. If you've ever penned something after a brisk walk or a good workout, you'll appreciate the edge it gives you as you tackle a blank page or delve into revisions and edits.
While a professional athlete's training routine might not be feasible for everyone, there's no excuse not to move more. Transform your writing space into an exercise zone by incorporating simple, low-impact activities that fit into your schedule and ability level.
Taking a Stroll
Great writers like Charles Dickens and Henry David Thoreau often paired their literary efforts with regular walks. A brisk walk for at least 30 minutes can be a fantastic warm-up before writing or a stress-relieving post-session activity. Make walking a creative ritual that fosters fresh ideas and problem-solving.
I personally walk for around 30 minutes upon waking, after brushing my teeth and before I start writing. Even if you work from home like I do, take advantage of those morning freshness minutes. Regardless of your schedule, find the time to incorporate walking, if not every day, every other day. Or, consider walking to the rail station instead of driving to work. Biking and running can also be viable options to explore.

Micro Workouts for Heart and Legs
As writers, we indirectly stimulate our heart through exercises that target our leg muscles. Walking, running, and cycling are effective cardio exercises, but there are other accessible and entertaining activities that get your heart pumping during writing breaks:
- Jump up enthusiastically like you're leaping over an imaginary rope - do this right beside your desk
- Perform jumping jacks
- Bend your knees repeatedly
Going Up and Down the Steps
Every little bit counts. If you live on the second floor or have stairs nearby, don't hesitate to take advantage of them. Instead of leaving a glass of water or a snack on your desk, get up and fetch it from the kitchen whenever you're thirsty or hungry. Apart from pleasing your leg muscles, the beverage or food will taste better due to the effort.
At-Home Body Weight Exercises
Consider leveraging your body weight to perform push-ups and sit-ups without any special equipment. The number of reps and frequency depends on factors such as your fitness level and objectives, so you might want to investigate basic training routines on the web.
In summary, an active mind isn't our only concern - an active body is equally vital for writers. We should walk, run, engage in heart-pumping activities, and do body weight exercises. Even joining a gym nearby can boost our overall health and cognitive function. So, don't shy away from testing your body's capabilities!
