Worldwide criticism intensifies towards Israel due to its ongoing military operation in Gaza

In the conflict-ridden region of Gaza, the ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas remain stalled and fragile, as the humanitarian crisis deepens.

Over the past 24 hours, Gaza's Health Ministry reported a tragic increase, with 11 more adults dying of malnutrition-related causes, bringing the total to 114 since late June. This alarming statistic serves as a stark reminder of the dire situation in the region.

Amidst this crisis, reports suggest that snipers and tanks fired on aid-seekers, forcing them to retreat. One witness, Ramadan Gaber, shared his harrowing account, stating that he was forced to retreat due to the gunfire.

As of mid-August 2025, the core issues in these ongoing negotiations are hostages exchange, Israeli military presence and control of Gaza, Hamas disarmament, humanitarian aid delivery, and guarantees for permanent cessation of hostilities.

The negotiations were initially aimed at a phased ceasefire, hostages-prisoners exchange, Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, and reconstruction efforts. However, these negotiations were broken by Israel in March 2025 after Hamas refused to extend the ceasefire or release hostages.

Talks about a two-month ceasefire to facilitate the release of about 10 living and 15 deceased Israeli hostages, along with significant humanitarian aid for Gaza, have been ongoing. However, the mechanisms for delivering aid are disputed, and Israel's repositioning of its forces inside Gaza and Hamas’s demand for a permanent end to the war present major obstacles.

Israel's security cabinet has approved a plan for Israeli Defense Forces to take control of Gaza City, anticipating a forced evacuation of Gaza residents over two months and expanding occupation. This plan contradicts international efforts aimed at ending the war and promoting a two-state solution.

International mediators, including Egypt, Qatar, and the United States, have been involved, but talks have repeatedly reached deadlocks. The differences over military control, humanitarian access, and guarantees for cessation of hostilities have proven to be significant hurdles.

Despite these challenges, Hamas reportedly has expressed a willingness to return to ceasefire negotiations, indicating some desire to engage diplomatically.

The situation in Gaza has not gone unnoticed, with international condemnation growing over Israel's decision for a military takeover of Gaza City. A joint statement by nine countries, including Germany, Britain, France, and Canada, strongly rejects Israel's decision for the large-scale military operation.

In response to the growing crisis, airdrops of aid have been carried out in various parts of Gaza. At least 106 packages of aid were airdropped Saturday, with Italy and Greece joining the multicountry effort for the first time. However, reports suggest that Israeli forces fired toward crowds approaching a GHF distribution site, a military zone that bisects Gaza.

The United Nations and partners have called repeatedly for more trucks waiting outside Gaza to be allowed safely into the territory and destinations inside it for distribution. The U.N. Security Council is planning an emergency meeting on the situation in Gaza.

As the situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate, families of hostages are rallying to pressure the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu amid new fears over the 50 remaining hostages, with 20 of them thought to be alive and struggling.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stated that Israel is "forcing Palestinians into a state of near-starvation to the point that they abandon their land voluntarily." This statement underscores the gravity of the situation and the urgent need for a peaceful resolution.

In the midst of this crisis, there is hope. U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff is expected to meet with Qatar's prime minister in Spain to discuss a new proposal to end the war. Mediators Egypt and Qatar are preparing a new ceasefire framework that would include the release of all hostages in one go in return for the war's end and the withdrawal of Israeli forces.

As the world watches, let us hope for a peaceful resolution to this ongoing conflict and an end to the suffering of the people of Gaza.
