Yakutia Performs First-Ever Endovascular Closure of Left Atrial Appendage
A groundbreaking procedure has been performed in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) for the first time. Endovascular closure of the left atrial appendage was successfully carried out using a Watchman device, marking a significant step in the fight against stroke in the region.
The procedure, led by Leonid Pavlov and Marianna Amosova, involved isolating the left atrial appendage from the main blood flow using a tiny umbrella-like device. This prevents clot formation, which is a fivefold risk factor for cardioembolic stroke. The method was scientifically guided by federal-level expert Karapet Davtyan, MD, PhD, professor. Patients could potentially be discharged home within two days due to the short recovery period.
The introduction of this high-tech medical care aims to extend lifespan and maintain quality of life for residents with serious cardiovascular diseases. It was performed on patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) who were unable to tolerate standard anticoagulant therapy due to bleeding risk.
The successful endovascular closure of the left atrial appendage in Yakutia opens a new chapter in stroke prevention. The procedure, guided by federal experts and led by local specialists, promises a shorter recovery period and improved quality of life for patients with atrial fibrillation.
