Yearly blood drive in N.S. recognizes man who perished from non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (10th edition)
In the heart of Dartmouth, N.S., Canadian Blood Services is set to host the 10th annual blood drive in honour of Jeremy Burke. This event, held at Saint John Church XXIII on Colby Drive, is a poignant reminder of the life lost too soon.
Jeremy Burke, a young man of 22, passed away in July 2016 due to non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The first blood drive in his honour was held just two weeks after his death, marking the beginning of an annual tradition.
The blood drive, which runs from noon to 3 p.m. and from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, is more than just a donation event. It's a place where loved ones and community members gather to share stories, celebrate Jeremy's life, and honour his memory.
The 'Burkesquad', a group consisting of Jeremy's family and friends, donate blood together every year in Cole Harbour. This year, they join the community in Dartmouth to continue the tradition that has spanned a decade.
The event, which is emotional and successful, serves a practical purpose as well. Blood donations are crucial for maintaining a stable supply for hospitals and patients in need. By donating, individuals can make a tangible difference in the lives of others.
The person who initially proposed the idea for this annual blood drive remains unspecified. However, their initiative has resulted in a lasting tribute to Jeremy Burke, a young man whose life was cut short by a tragic illness but whose memory lives on through this heartfelt event.
This year's blood drive is another opportunity for the community to come together, remember Jeremy, and give back in a meaningful way. For those in the Dartmouth area, it's an event not to be missed.
